Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa's Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world's heritage. Join us as we explore one of these protected monuments.

In the heart of Finland's capital city of Helsinki is the proud and majestic Uspenski Cathedral, the largest Orthodox church in western Europe. The red brick building is an impressive architectural symbol of the relationship that once existed between Finland and the Russian Empire.

With its total of 13 golden cupolas that signify dramatic flames, Uspenski Cathedral is highly reminiscent of traditional Russian church design.

Many thousands of the bricks used for the construction of Uspenski were salvaged from another building. The dismantling of the Bomarsund Fortress provided the church with economical building material.

Uspenski Cathedral is one of the most important buildings in Helsinki and is also a magnificent symbol of Finland's dramatic religious history.
